New Interact Club

New Interact ClubThe Park Hill South Interact Club was chartered on Tuesday, February 12, 2008. Parkville Rotarian Nicole Kirby, who has met with the provisional club for the last several months, was Master of Ceremony for the event. She introduced the charter members and the club officers: President Ben Carrier, Vice President Amber Bozarth, Secretary Nicole Cofer, and Treasurer Amanda Mitchell. Parkville Club President Don Allenbrand offered inspiring words for the students and restated the Parkville Rotary commitment to the new Interact Club. Photo shows Interact Charter members attending the Charter Banquet posing with Rotarian Nicole Kirby (upper right).

In his remarks, Interact President Ben said that some months ago 5 students came together to form an Interact Club and their number had grown to 18 charter members. He sited the provisional club's goals to (1) establish club unity, (2) become a chartered club and (3) establish themselves within the Park Hill South High School. He went on to say that upon receiving their Club Charter from Parkville President Don, they have now reached all three goals.

The spirit and enthusiasm of the youthful group was apparent in Ben's recap of the club's projects, such as the canned goods drive and raffle to raise money for care packages for soldiers in Iraq. They have organized an upcoming roller skating party to raise money for mosquito netting for malaria prevention in Zambia. It is amazing what these young students are accomplishing with only 18 members and meetings twice a month!

Congratulations to the new and spirited Park Hill South Interact Club and thank you to Nicole Kirby, President Don Allenbrand and the Parkville Rotary Club for your sponsorship and support.

About Interact

Interact logoInteract is Rotary International's service club for young people ages 14 to 18. Interact clubs are sponsored by individual Rotary clubs, which provide support and guidance, but they are self-governing and self- supporting.

Club membership varies greatly. Clubs can be single gender or mixed, large or small. They can draw from the student body of a single school or from two or more schools in the same community.

Each year, Interact clubs complete at least two community service projects, one of which furthers international understanding and goodwill. Through these efforts, Interactors develop a network of friendships with local and overseas clubs and learn the importance of (1)Developing leadership skills and personal integrity (2)Demonstrating helpfulness and respect for others (3)Understanding the value of individual responsibility and hard work and (4) Advancing international understanding and goodwill.

As one of the most significant and fastest-growing programs of Rotary service, with more than 10,700 clubs in 109 countries and geographical areas, Interact has become a worldwide phenomenon. Almost 200,000 young people are involved in Interact.

Recruiting Young Rotarians

St Joe SSIn late January, St Joseph South Side Rotary Club and President Joyce Edwards had a very special new member induction. T. J. Sampson became the fourth generation to join the club.

T. J.'s great-grandfather, Buck Sampson, was a charter member, helping found the club in the South Side in 1937. T.J.'s grandfather, James Sampson, joined in 1967 and his father, Jeff Sampson, became a Rotary member 20 years later. Three generations were present at T.J.'s induction ceremony at the King Hill Methodist Church (all three generations seen in photo). Buck Sampson died in 1966. "It's always nice to be able to help the community," said T.J., a 24- year-old funeral director and embalmer at Clark- Sampson Funeral Home.

According to "Bowling Alone," a book about the decline of volunteerism, the number of people who are active volunteers in their community has dropped by 60 percent since the 1970s. The South Side Rotary has about 30 members spanning various age groups. T.J. joins one other member his age, Lindsay Bernard. "I think it's good to see young people involved," T.J. said. "I think it looks good, not just for the club itself, but the fact that there are young people in the community getting involved. You don't see that as often anymore."

Attention Rotary Club Presidents and Membership Chairs: Send your Club story about recruiting young members into Rotary to District Membership Chair Gordon Hadden ghadden@sbcglobal.net.

Valerie Anderson to Serve on International RYLA Committee

ValerieRotary International President-elect Dong Kurn Lee has invited Valerie Anderson to serve as a Member on the International RYLA Committee for the Rotary year July 1, 2008 through June 30, 2009. This committee provides support and guidance to Rotarians carrying out RYLA programs in their districts and encourages RYLA training at the zone and district levels to expand the scope and strengthen the effectiveness or RYLA worldwide. Under the direction of the President, it will develop the program content and plan the RYLA meeting in connection with the Birmingham Convention and promote attendance for this meeting.

Valerie has dedicated the past 3 years in restructuring and strengthening the mutli-district Missouri RYLA. District 6040 has benefited from Valerie's leadership. Congratulations, Valerie!

Shoes Mission Trip

Box of Shoesby Cassy Venters, District Chair International Service

Rotary District 6040 Mission Trip. No passport needed. And you can drink the water

Many people are interested in hands-on support for community and international service projects. April 29- May 1, 2008 Rotarians will have the opportunity to work in the Buckner International warehouse sorting and boxing shoes for the Shoes for Orphan Souls program.

Participants in the 2008 mission trip will "follow" our shoes from district conference to Dallas and spend three days categorizing shoes by size and type of shoe and boxing them for shipment. Buckner International relies on this assistance to help them deliver the high quality, donated shoes to children in orphanages in Russia, Africa, Eastern Europe and Central and South America.

Each participant is responsible for their own expenses which will include transportation to Dallas (DFW International Airport and Love Field), hotel, meals, and local transportation in Dallas. Estimated costs of various items (as of 2/12/08) are: RT airfare $122; Hotel $70/night/room at Fairfield Inn near the warehouse, arrangements made by Buckner, includes complimentary breakfast; Meals $25/person/day; Rental car rates $120 to $270 depending on company and type of vehicle; Travel distance Kansas City to Dallas 8.5 hours/600 miles.

Registration for the mission is due to Cassy Venters by April 15, 2008. Flyers describing the tour will be sent to club presidents and presidents-elect and posted on our district website. To discuss the mission trip, contact Cassy Venters at cdventers@yahoo.com.

1st Annual Foundation Alumni Reception

On Saturday, March 1st, District 6040 Rotarians are invited to attend our first annual Foundation Alumni Reception at the Kansas City International Airport Hilton. The reception is an opportunity to recognize and honor our Alumni.

With the support of Rotary International, our District is making an effort to keep close contact with Rotary Foundation Alumni. District Alumni Chair Jeff Crowley is contacting all Foundation Alumni in our District and Rotarians will be able to reconnect with them at this event. For more information contact Jeff Crowley crowleys@classicnet.net.

The reception is followed by the closing banquet for the Ambassadorial Scholar Seminar (banquet cost is $30 per person) which is an opportunity to meet the outgoing Ambassadorial Scholars. This is a special year in that leaders of the International Alliance will be in Kansas City to observe the Seminar and then hold the Alliance meeting on March 2nd. What a nice opportunity to meet these Rotarians from all parts of the world. Registration forms are available on the District web site www.rotary6040.org.

Celebrate Rotary Day

Missouri Rotary DayMissouri Governor Matt Blunt proclaimed February 23 as Rotary Day in Missouri. Rotary District Governors 6040 Sally Bibb, 6060 Scott Harness, and 6080 Joe Beltz were presented the signed proclamation from Governor Blunt. Rotarian Les Crider represented District 6110, a portion of which is in southern Missouri. Also present at the Proclamation was Higginsville Club President Chris Kaiser who was joined by Club Presidents from Districts 6060 and 6080. Each Club President will receive a copy of the Proclamation.

Rotary's Public Image Resource Group encourages Rotary clubs to select a day and highlight Rotary's involvement in the local and global community. The Public Image Resource Group recommends Rotary's "birthday" on February 23 as an ideal date for several reasons. First, as Rotary's anniversary, February 23 allows clubs and districts a natural day to recognize Rotary's past, present and future. Second, the more clubs and districts around the world that celebrate Rotary Day on the same day, the greater the positive impact on Rotary's public image.

Yet, while publicizing Rotary on its February 23 birthday is ideal, ANY day can be identified as "Rotary Day" in your community. What is key is to plan a high visibility community service project or event for Rotary Day that helps to communicate what Rotary is and does with your community. Club Presidents recently received a list of ideas on ways to celebrate.

Rotary Night at NAIA Tournament

NAIAMark your calendars! The NAIA Basketball Tournament is March 19-25 at Municipal Auditorium in downtown Kansas City. Our District 6040, under the leadership of Assistant Governor Jerry Wolfe, is planning an NAIA Rotary night on SATURDAY, MARCH 22, 2008. There will be two games that night which are semi final games and promise to be good games. There are also activities in the lower auditorium for the younger people. This could be a good family event which is not only an opportunity for Rotary fellowship but also some Rotary recognition.

Rotarians and their guests are invited to attend. Adult tickets are $12 and student/child tickets are $5 and Rotarians are responsible for buying thier own tickets. An order form can be found on the district web site www.rotary6040.org or the NAIA web site www.naia.org or email dboyd@naia.org. Wouldn't it be a fun evening if we had hundreds of Rotarians and their families joined together for the game.

Four Way Test Speech Contest

Each year, District 6040 holds a high school speech contest designed to promote student's understanding of the values in Rotary's Four Way Test.

Why should your club participate? This contest is an excellent way to annually remind club members of the importance of the Four Way Test. It is also an excellent way for students to become aware of Rotary and how the Four Way Test affects their lives. Perhaps those students will become future Rotarians.

District Chair Wade Maupin wademaupin@yahoo.com has sent information on the speech contest to Club Presidents and information is also listed on the district web site. Four Way Test speech applications are due to Chairman Wade by March 28.

Tips, Tools, & Training

Rotary Sharesby DGN Bob Jones, District Trainer

I can remember back in grade school when our teacher asked each of use to define how large of a bubble we were seeing. It took me while to understand that she was referring to the World as our bubble. A question to pose to your club is, "How large is the Rotary bubble they are seeing"? I predict you will receive a great number of answers and the normal will be 1.2 million+ members in Rotary, over 32,000 clubs, over 530 districts and over 200 countries. All of which are correct.

Why not use "World Understanding" month to emphasize the worldliness of Rotary International in your club meeting training messages. This can also be a great time to encourage your club members to make the positive decision to attend the District Conference in Kansas City in April, as well as the International Convention in Los Angeles in June. Everyone with whom I have visited who has had the opportunity to attend an International Convention proudly proclaims that it has enhanced their outlook on Rotary. I know from my own experience, each International Convention has provided me the opportunity to make new Rotary friends and also enabled me to find out about their home Districts and the unique challenges they face on a day to day basis.

As we are all aware, our own club members make some of the better programs we will experience thought the year. Why not ask your club members to tell something they have witnessed in their world travels and how these experiences have changed their approach to life, friendship and Rotary? I can almost guarantee that you will learn some very interesting things about your other club members as well as see some connecting points to your own experiences and life.

Happy travels and understandings in your new Rotary world!

Club Attendance Reports

District Conference

District Conference ROTARY SHARES is April 25th and 26th and will be held at the Hyatt Regency Crown Center in Kansas City. Conference Co-Chairs Bonnie Brown and Dick Retrum are planning a conference with something for everyone; there will be sessions to SHARE IDEAS, SHARE SUCCESSES, and SHARE FRIENDSHIPS.

On Friday, April 25th, following the conference opening at 1:00 PM, there will be session on the Rotary Foundation including presentations from the GSE outbound District 6040 team and the inbound Brazilian team. Also on the afternoon program is a visit from our Youth Exchange students from Thailand, Iceland, Brazil, and Germany. At the evening dinner, Governor elect Elizabeth Usovicz will introduce the Club Presidents elect. Past Rotary International Director Lynmar Brock will be the keynote speaker and give remarks on the Rotary Foundation.

The conference resumes on Saturday morning at 8:45 AM with a session on community and international projects. This promises to be a lively session with clubs sharing their project successes plus there will be a short workshop on the grant writing process. Lunch will feature Buckner International, our shoes partner, and end with the traditional shoes roll call which is always a fun and inspiring event.

Saturday afternoon is all about membership building blocks. A special guest facilitator is Michael Caruso, noted motivational speaker, and there will be opportunities for sharing of membership recruitment and retention ideas. Current Club Presidents will be honored at the Governor's Banquet with special recognition to Club Presidents who have personally sponsored a new member. The featured speaker is David Forward, the author of "A Century of Service." David is known for his wit and his inspirational words. The evening ends with a dance featuring live music from the band Mach 4.

Please plan to attend the Conference. If your time allows, you will enjoy all the sessions. If your schedule is full, plan to attend the sessions that most interest you. The registration is flexible and you can register for the full conference or ala carte. Registration forms and the conference agenda are on the district web site www.rotary6040.org
